Integration of Academics

NIFT being primarily an academic institution has access to a large pool of eager young students from all disciplines – design, technology and management who contribute to the cluster development initiative. Young minds, in turn are enriched by the experience of working with rural artisans. When we wanted to see how lambani embroidery could be integrated in a fashionable way into Indian garments, the 25 students who developed their term project garments with the lambani artisans through a workshop held on NIFT campus reinterpreted the motifs, colours and stitches. The artisans in turn had an exposure to processes of pattern cutting, garment fitting etc., under the guidance of faculty. To take this further, we plan to set up a tailoring unit for the embroidery artisans at Hampi. Tailoring machines have been procured and installed in the RDEC office at Malappangudi. Students of textile design developed attractive woven table mats prior to the loom training of beneficiaries of banana fibre. Fashion and Lifestyle Accessory’s students also developed products made out of banana fibre which increases the value of the material and also diversifies the product range.

Challenges Ahead
Building capacities in critical areas of production, marketing and leadership among the artisans would be the means through which poverty alleviation can take place; anchoring these processes is the challenge we are preparing for.
