The fashion &
textiles department offers a broad spectrum education in textiles while
developing creativity, originality and design application in apparel and
home fashion industries.
Textile Design forms the core of the whole business of fashion.
Textile Design today is that strategic value adding activity that can
make all the difference in transforming a fashion business into an
economically viable and profitable proposition. This program prepares
the students for a wide range of careers in textile mills and export
houses with fashion designers, design studios, buying houses and
handloom cooperatives as designer or design managers.
The fulcrum of F&T department, Chennai is the faculty team which has
rich expertise in the area of design, management and technology and
years of hands-on industrial experience.The academic
inputs catered to the students specialising both Knitwear and Textile
Design is well supported by the most modern technological equipments
which is regularly updated by the institute. The students get an
opportunity to work on state of the art equipments like computerised
flat bed knitting machines such as Shima Sieki, circular jacquard
knitting and hand flat knitting machines. The department also have well
equipped dyeing & printing lab, textile testing lab, pattern making, and
garment construction labs. The computer lab is equipped with latest
design software like Photoshop, Corel draw, PC Tex, Auto Tex, Fashion
Studio, 3D MAX, LECTRA. The testing lab is well equipped with modern &
sophisticated instruments to test yarn and fabric samples much
accurately and quickly.
Adding another feather to its cap is the location of the institute which
is situated in the hub of the major knitwear and home fashion industries
namely at Chennai, Erode, Salem, Karur, Tirupur etc. Strong linkages
with the industry are maintained so that students get working knowledge
of different types of organizations. This helps the students to get wide
industrial exposure thereby enable them in gaining invaluable knowledge,
experience & awareness about the latest global trends. The knitwear
design students in their fifth semester set trend forecasting theme
pavilion in India Knit Fair, Tirupur which is well appreciated and
received by industry experts. The final semester students of both
Textile Design and Knitwear Design are required to undertake a
Graduation Project with an industrial client, export house, designer or
NGO and work on the brief given by the sponsor which will culminate into
a Fashion Show. As the final year students undergo graduation projects
in the real life situation in the industries it paves way for their
pre-placement offers and placements as a whole as they have been offered
as “Industry-Ready” Professionals.
