NIFT Act

The NIFT Act (National Institute of Fashion Technology Act, 2006) is an Indian parliamentary law enacted to establish NIFT as a statutory body under the Ministry of Textiles. The legislation granted the institute formal autonomy, making it the first institution in India empowered to award its own degrees in fashion education.

Statutory Status: Enacted on 13 July 2006, and brought into effect on 1 April 2007. Academic Power: It empowers NIFT to grant degrees and other academic distinctions. Governance: It outlines the framework for a Board of Governors and the Senate to steer the institution, with the President of India serving as the 'Visitor'.
