The Institute

The Shillong Centre of the National Institute of Fashion Technology was formally inaugurated on 11th July 2008. It commenced functioning from the academic session 2008-09 with two Departments, namely, Fashion Design and Fashion & Lifestyle Accessories Department .The Centre is currently offering Two Undergraduate 4 Years courses - Fashion Design and Accessory Design and One Post Graduate Two years course - Master of Fashion Management.

The establishment of the Shillong Centre of the National Institute of Fashion Technology has fulfilled a long felt need of the people of the North East region. The inherent creative and innovative orientation of the people of the region has found expression through NIFT Shillong. In turn, the centre has been enriched by knowledge from traditional skills, new materials and creativity, particularly to the North East.

The campus is fully equipped to provide learning environment to the students and to impact creative education. Students have an access to IT Labs and a very rich Resource Centre, which has a rare and good collection of books, magazines and samples related to fashion industry. NIFT as a Institute is a pioneer in envisioning and evolving fashion business education in the country, and this endeavor saw opening of four New Centers in 2008. Shillong being one of them. NIFT now has a network of sixteen professionally managed domestic centres at Shillong, Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Jodpur, Kangra, Kannur, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Patna, Raebareli and Srinagar. NIFT has further spread its wings globally with the opening of an international centre at Mauritius.

The institute boasts of a very close contact with the intellectual art and design sect of the society all over the country. Due to the advantage of being one of the pioneer institutions coming in the state, the institute is now very well networked to satisfy the academic requirements of NIFT at Shillong.

The institute portrays itself as a leader in fashion education in the entire North-East states. NIFT Shillong has committed itself in exploring growth paradigms and to act like a catalyst in formulating the structural roadmap for the apparel and allied industry. NIFT Shillong is looking forward to contribute towards upliftment of the craftsmen through workshops and design intervention.

Brief Background on the permanent campus

Government of Meghalaya has provided 20.31 acres of land to NIFT, Shillong for Construction of it's permanent campus at Umsawali, Shillong. The distance between present campus to the Permanent campus is approximately 12 kilometers. Construction work of NIFT Shillong Permanent Campus started on 6th December 2013 and after 2 years and 9 months, 90% of the construction work is completed (i.e. as on 30/09/2016). All the Buildings are in completion stage. Sanitary, Electrical and Water Supply works are on-going in all the buildings. As the Construction of the Director Residence & Guest House started at a later stage, the progress currently is at 70% for Directors' Residence and 30% for Guest House.The installation of rooftop Solar PV system has been initiated at the permanent campus in collaboration with MNREDA.
