Dr. Mohankumar VK is an associate professor in the Department of Knitwear Design at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Bengaluru, with over 27 years of experience in the fashion industry, design education, and research. A knitwear designer, educator, and researcher, his expertise includes knitwear design, sportswear, computerized knitting, virtual prototyping, digital fashion, and AI-enabled fashion education.

He holds an M.Des. and Ph.D. in Knitwear Design and Technology from NIFT, New Delhi, and has received advanced training in computerized knitting from Shima Seiki, Japan. He has published and presented 10 research papers and received the Best Research Paper Award in an international conference at IIT Delhi. He also chaired a research paper presentation session at ICORD 2025, IIT Hyderabad.

Dr. Kumar led the design team for the Gaganyaan astronauts’ ground uniform and visual identity for ISRO. His industry experience includes four years with TCNS Ltd., JK Modi Overseas, and ITC Ltd. He has worked as a design consultant, developed uniforms for PSUs and collections for fashion brands, and organized fashion shows in India and Europe.

He received the Innovative Designer Award for his graduating collection, featured in Elle, Femina, Fashion and Beyond, and Vanitha. At NIFT Bengaluru, he has headed the Fashion Design, Foundation Program, and Knitwear Design departments at NIFT Bengaluru.
