Aurineeta Das is an Associate Professor in the Department of Textile Design at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Shillong. Her expertise spans textile design, fashion styling, and craft studies, with a focus on integrating traditional knowledge with contemporary design practices. Through her teaching, she encourages critical thinking, creativity, and material exploration to prepare students for evolving design contexts.
Her research interests include textile surface development, indigenous textiles, craft documentation, and sustainable design. She explores the potential of traditional craft knowledge in contemporary applications through field-based research and interdisciplinary approaches. Her academic work contributes to strengthening the dialogue between craft heritage, innovation, and design education.
Beyond academics, Aurineeta is committed to promoting craft awareness through collaborations with artisan communities and experiential learning initiatives. She has trained artisans in various clusters of North East and Odisha. She developed contemporary products along with the artisans keeping the traditional designs intact in various crafts like Monpa ,Adi,Apatani,Sherdukpen,Mishing,Tai Turung,Tai Khamyeng woven textiles ,cane & bamboo ,coir etc.She mentors students in design-led projects that emphasize cultural sensitivity, sustainability, and social relevance. Her professional interests include documenting traditional textile practices, exploring regional craft traditions, and fostering meaningful connections between design, culture, and community.
