Associate Professor, Textile Design (BDes)
Hyderabad CampusDr. Prithwiraj Mal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Textile Design at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Hyderabad. He has extensive academic experience in textile science, textile processing, quality assurance, knitting, comfort, optimization, and innovative textiles. He holds a B.Sc. (Tech.) in Textile Technology from the University of Calcutta, an M.Tech. in Textile Engineering from IIT Delhi, and a Ph.D. in Engineering from Jadavpur University.
His research interests include textile and clothing comfort, optimization and decision-making techniques, product development, and innovative textiles. He has published more than 20 research papers in peer-reviewed journals and presented his work at national and international conferences. His research includes studies on knitted-fabric comfort, thermal and air transmission, UV protection, and optimization using experimental techniques. He has authored or co-authored three books in textile engineering and related areas.
At NIFT Hyderabad, Dr. Mal contributes to teaching, curriculum development, academic administration, student mentoring, research, and industry engagement. He participates in faculty development programmes, industry-oriented training, craft and handloom initiatives, and academic outreach activities. His professional interests focus on strengthening interdisciplinary connections between textile technology, design, innovation, sustainability, and contemporary applications in the textile and fashion industry.
