Dr. Sanjib Kumar Das is an Associate Professor in the Leather Design discipline at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kolkata. He has over 28 years of professional and academic experience in the field of Fashion, Apparel, and Accessories. His areas of expertise include apparel design, product development, design communication, marketing, business development, institutional administration, and process implementation.
His research interests focus on sustainable product development, futuristic design innovation and the integration of traditional crafts with contemporary design practices. He has successfully led one of NIFT’s landmark international initiatives, the NIFT–ETIDI Twinning Project, which focuses on capacity building for the Ethiopian Textile and Garment Industry. His academic work encompasses research, documentation, design development, and industry–academia collaboration, with particular interest in leather, handicrafts, Khadi and rural crafts.
He takes an active interest in student mentoring, industry engagement, design consultancy, professional networking, and outreach activities. He promotes experiential learning through field visits, live industry projects, craft-cluster studies, and hands-on product development. He is also an avid wildlife and macro photographer, with a keen interest in visual storytelling and visual communication. His creative pursuits complement his academic and professional practice by strengthening his engagement with design documentation, observation, and visual expression.
