Dr. Sumantra Bakshi is Associated Professor in Knitwear Design department and specialises in Textile Material manufacturing and processing. He teaches textile technology, print design, textile dyeing & finishing, high performance textiles, sportswear, warp knitting technology and sustainability related subjects. His research interests are in advanced and sustainable textile fiber applications in fashion and functional textiles. He joined NIFT Kolkata in 2008. He has previously served the textile industry as a technocrat in Vardhman Textiles limited from 1999 to 2008. He has completed his B Tech in Textile Technology from College of Textile Technology, Berhampur, under University of Calcutta in 1999. He has completed his PhD from Jadavpur University in 2018.
He leads research on development and application of novel sustainable fibers like jute, ramie, linen and indigenous wool in fashionable, functional, smart, value added apparels, interiors and accessories.
In this endeavour he and his team in Knitwear Design department has already developed and demonstrated successful sample products and prototypes in collaboration with ICAR-NIFET, IJIRA to name a few.
He has published his research work in international journals like Journal of Textile Institute, Journal of Fiber and Polymer, International Journal of Fiber Science and Technology to name a few. He has presented at international conferences in Textile, Filtech and few other international conferences.
