Assistant Professor, Fashion Communication, NIFT Chennai
Ashmita Mondal is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Fashion Communication at NIFT Chennai. Her academic and professional practice spans art, design, craft, and spatial and retail environments, with expertise in Store Experience Design, Exhibition Space Design, Material Studies, Art and Design Aesthetics, Drawing and Illustration, Visual Culture Studies, and Craft Interventions. She holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Graphics and Printmaking from Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan. Before joining NIFT Chennai in 2021, she gained over nine years of academic experience across Fashion, Art, and Architecture.
Her research and creative practice engage with Japanese carpentry and woodworking, traditional and regional folk art and craft practices, printmaking, and the role of material culture in everyday life and visual communication. Her work examines how traditional knowledge, making practices, and materiality can inform contemporary design. She has published articles in national and international journals and exhibited her work in national and international galleries. She has also conducted workshops at Cholamandal Artists’ Village, DakshinaChitra, Kalakshetra, and Vellore Institute of Technology, engaging with diverse audiences through hands-on explorations of print, woodcraft, and material processes.
Alongside her creative and academic practice, Ashmita takes an active role in the academic and administrative activities of the institution. She is particularly interested in Indian art and architecture, regional craft traditions, woodworking, and material-based making. Her engagement with these areas extends to student mentoring and practice-led learning, encouraging an appreciation of craftsmanship, cultural contexts, and the possibilities of materials within contemporary design.
