Single Ikat Patola from Surendranagar, Gujarat, is a well-known traditional textile. It features an intricate resist-dyeing technique and vibrant geometric patterns. Unlike double ikat, where both the warp and weft are dyed beforehand, Surendranagar’s single ikat mainly involves resist-dyeing either the warp or the weft threads before weaving. This requires precision, planning, and a high level of skill. Every motif must match perfectly when woven on the loom. The artisans in this region often use motifs that symbolize good luck, nature, and cultural heritage, including flowers, checks, and traditional designs. Surendranagar Patola is notable for its bold colors and durability, along with the distinctive hazy, feathered edges of its patterns, which signify true ikat craftsmanship. Today, the craft continues to develop while maintaining its rich history and skilled artistry.
