Panchkula CampusDr. Akhtarul Islam Amjad is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Fashion Technology at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Panchkula. He also serves as the Centre Coordinator (Foundation Programme) and Faculty Advisor for the Adventure Club. With over 11 years of combined industrial, research, and academic experience, he specializes in textile engineering, garment technology, sustainable manufacturing, and fashion technology. He received his Ph.D. in Textile Engineering, M.Tech. in Textile Engineering and Management from NIT Jalandhar, and B.Tech. in Textile Engineering. Before joining NIFT, he served as an Assistant Professor at Uttar Pradesh Textile Technology Institute, Kanpur, and held technical positions in RSWM Ltd., Vardhman Yarns and Threads Ltd., and Nahar Spinning Mills.
His research interests include sustainable textiles, recycled fibres, garment manufacturing, consumer behaviour, artificial intelligence in fashion, and textile recycling. He has authored and presented more than 90 research papers in international journals and conferences. His scholarly contributions include editing a Springer book, authoring book chapters for Springer and Elsevier, and participating in collaborative research and consultancy projects focused on sustainable textile technologies. Dr. Amjad actively mentors students and promotes innovation through academic outreach, workshops, conferences, industrial visits, and entrepreneurship initiatives. He is a Life Member of the Thriving Engineers Alumni Association and the Asian Polymer Association. His professional interests include smart textiles, sustainable product development, and strengthening industry–academia collaboration to address emerging challenges in the global textile and fashion industry
