Assistant Professor, Textile Design (BDes)
Dr. S. Aishwariya is an Assistant Professor in Textile Design at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Chennai. Her areas of expertise include sustainable textile production, new product development, natural dyes, Indian and world textiles, non-loom techniques, craft research, hand embroidery, surface embellishment and creative thinking skills. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design, a Master’s degree in Textiles and a Ph.D. in Sustainability. She is a double gold medallist at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Her Ph.D. was funded by the President of India through the DST Fellowship (SRF) for meritorious students.
Her research focuses on organic waste recycling, mindful curation and application of textiles for apparel and home, innovative and functional textiles, natural dye coloration and printing, and the research and documentation of traditional crafts through design and product interventions. She holds two patents and has published more than 60 articles in national and international journals. She is the recipient of the Young Scientist Award 2011 and has presented her research internationally in Zurich, Switzerland, and nationally at IIT Delhi, India. Her classroom projects involve collaborations with industry and artisans, providing young designers with practical exposure while fostering sensitivity towards slow fashion, craft heritage and sustainable design.
Dr. Aishwariya actively contributes to academic, institutional and outreach initiatives at NIFT. As Nodal Officer for Admissions, she coordinates outreach activities, promotes NIFT programmes, participates in education fairs and conducts design workshops for school students. She contributes to curriculum development as a Co-Anchor Faculty, serves on the Board of Studies and Doctoral Committee, and is a member of the National Advisory Board for an international conference. She has also contributed as a reviewer and delivered invited lectures. She is a member of the Textile Association of India, Indian Science Congress, International Congress for Environmental Research, and Home Science Association of India. Her creative contributions include curating a badge for Khadi Mahotsav and contributing to textile installations at the NIFT Chennai campus. Through her academic, institutional and outreach initiatives, she encourages young designers to explore responsible design, creativity, innovation, craft heritage and sustainability.
