Montu Basak is an Associate Professor in the Department of Fashion Design at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Kolkata. A textile engineer by training, he earned his Bachelor of Textile Technology from the Government College of Engineering and Textile Technology, Serampore (GCETTS) in 2004, and subsequently completed a Master of Science in Advanced Textiles and Performance Clothing at the School of Design, University of Leeds, UK, in 2008.

His primary research focuses on material innovation within the textile sector. He specializes in medical textiles and healthcare products, with a particular emphasis on developing advanced textile fiber-based filter media designed to mitigate the adverse health impacts of air pollution. In addition to his technical research, Professor Basak is dedicated to integrating sustainability into design education, focusing on the engineering and development of sustainable solutions for contemporary real-world challenges.

His expertise in sustainability is supported by professional certifications, including a joint program by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and NIFT. Furthermore, he has completed advanced training in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Disclosure and Reporting Frameworks—including GRI, CDP, and BRSR—through the World Environment Council (WEC), India. Professor Basak has contributed to the academic community through various peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations in the fields of medical textiles, innovative product design, and circular fashion.

He also holds an official patent (Patent No. 525846), granted on March 14, 2024, for his invention titled "An Electronically Developed Table Loom."
