Studying fashion design at National Institute of Fashion Technology, Shillong (NIFT) was an important turning point in my journey. I entered with strong passion but limited creative and technical knowledge, which made the beginning challenging. Over time, the structured teaching and step-by-step guidance helped me understand the fundamentals of design and build a strong base. This foundation continues to support me in my Master’s studies in Paris, where independent work is expected. NIFT has played a key role in shaping my skills and confidence.

I, Lawanda Muttyent, an alumni of NIFT Shillong, Department of Fashion Design am now pursuing a Postgraduate Degree in Sustainable Fashion- Design Major at International Fashion Academy, Paris (IFA).

My experience at National Institute of Fashion Technology, Shillong (NIFT) was a transformative journey that helped me grow both personally and professionally. Coming from a non-creative background, I initially found it challenging to adapt to the world of fashion design. Although I had a strong passion for fashion, I lacked the technical knowledge and creative skills required to bring my ideas to life. However, the supportive learning environment and dedicated faculty at NIFT helped me overcome these challenges. One of the most valuable aspects of my education at NIFT was the strong emphasis on building a solid foundation. The institute taught us every stage of the design process, from research and concept development to illustration, garment construction, and final presentation. The practical assignments and projects allowed me to apply my learning and develop confidence in my abilities. The knowledge and skills I gained during my bachelor's degree continue to benefit me today as I pursue my Master's in Fashion Design in Paris. The strong fundamentals developed at NIFT have enabled me to approach projects independently and confidently. My time at NIFT not only shaped me as a designer but also taught me discipline, creativity, problem-solving, and perseverance, which continue to guide me in my academic and professional journey.
